Value Engineering Ethics

Objectives & Overview

This course and its corresponding resource define ‘black and white’ versus ‘gray’ areas VE practitioners face throughout their careers.

Both the course and the book discuss ethical issues commonly encountered by VE professionals. Since there is more than one acceptable response to these not-so-clear problems, the curriculum explores how to address these ethical concerns in accordance with basic professional standards.

While the document presents several recommended actions, the course encourages alternative solutions through interactive class discussions in which everyone provides input and personal opinions.

Course Description

Intentionally misrepresenting or conducting yourself under false pretenses for quick recognition or monetary gain always catches up to you. It's crucial to 'fly straight' in the professional atmosphere.

Similarly, it's vital never to discredit your competitors without significant reason. Mutual respect, while a seemingly rare commodity, is always the better path to long-term success. Assist your colleagues when needed—you never know when you may need a helping hand one day.

Lastly, you must maintain good standing with SAVE and other professional VE organizations. Obtain and keep your certification up to date. Contribute to the growth of the VE industry by presenting papers, serving on committees, and, most importantly, helping mentor those new to the profession; they are the next generation and the future of value engineering!

Following moral codes of conduct always pays off, even if you don't receive immediate recognition. A person's success is rewarded according to their merit! Your clients will undoubtedly appreciate and acknowledge your efforts when considering you and your recommendations for their subsequent projects. After all, customer retention and repeat business are VE practitioners' ultimate goals and a verifiable measure of success.
